"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." --Matthew 4:4
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." --Romans 10:17
On the pilgrimage, one luxury I have in abundance is one of the most precious and rarified these days: Time. As I bike for often eight to ten hours a day, my mind is free to wander from the high peaks of the Himalayas to the mysterious depths of human consciousness. I try to supply my mind with a diverse and nutritious diet -- "words of God" -- via audiobooks. "God" being a short hand for Love and Truth.
Here is a running list of audiobooks I have finished, in the order that I have listened to them.
I have included hyperlinks to authorized free download of the audiobooks above whenever possible. All other titles are easily available through torrent download -- you might need to Google around a bit. Librovox is a goldmine of public domain books read by volunteers, which covers almost all classical novels and literatures. For those who have access to local libraries, you might find a good selection of books on CDs there as well.
Thus far, I have been able to find all audiobooks I want to listen to for free download. If I can't, I take it as a signal that it's not time to listen to that particular book yet, given that there is an endless supply of wholesome, free books. On average, I finish a book in about two to three days. Commercial audiobooks go for about $15 to $20 a piece, and I would not be able to afford them at that rate :)
Three years ago, when I bicycled across the US, I finished listening to the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Quran, the Book of Mormon, and Moby Dick.
I have been listening to audiobooks all my life. It is one of my most cherished joy and convenient source of learning. It transforms any "idle time" into a feast for the mind. I look forward to every bit of downtime (waiting for bus, long commute, etc), to lose myself in another world. My mom gave me this priceless gift at an early age, as I fell asleep to wonderful stories on audio cassettes every night as I child. I am forever grateful, and ever intrigued to taste the next piece in life's "box of chocolate" :)
A pilgrimage around the globe by bicycle, in service of the ecological and spiritual awakening of our time.
